Shortnose cisco

Coregonus reighardi

The short nose and whitefish (Coregonus reighardi ) is an extremely rare or already extinct freshwater fish from the family of salmon (Salmonidae ). Scientifically it has been named after the American ichthyologists Jacob Reighard.

Description

It reaches a maximum length of 36 cm and a maximum weight of 540 g from other whitefish it differs mainly by its thicker build ( almost round in cross section), the shorter head ( of this kind has been given the name ) and the small eyes. Like many other Maränenarten is poorly understood and the Kurznasenmaräne. Little is known about their breeding behavior and life cycle, except that it spawns in the spring on the lake bottom. The oldest captive specimen had reached the age of 8 years. The diet consists of crustaceans, molluscs and zooplankton.

Occurrence

This species is native to the Nearctic region and came earlier in Lake Huron, in Michigan and in Ontario in Canada and the United States. The last known population was limited to the Georgian Bay in Lake Huron in Canada.

Endangering

From the IUCN is currently listed " critically endangered " as. However, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the Ministry of Natural Resources of Ontario consider this species as extinct because since 1985 no copy could be detected. This type was present until 1964 in Lake Ontario, was last seen in 1974 in Lake Michigan and in 1985 in the Georgian Bay. The parasitism of the invasive sea lamprey ( Petromyzon marinus ) in combination with the commercial overfishing has contributed to the dramatic collapse of the populations and their possible extinction.
