Shotts

Shotts is a town in the Scottish unitary authority of North Lanarkshire. It is located in the Central Belt about 27 km south-east of Glasgow and 38 miles south-west of Edinburgh. With the Cummins Engine Factory is a monument of the highest category A Scottish monument in Shotts.

History

Nucleus of the present town of Shotts was the village of Kirk of Shotts, which is four kilometers north- northwest of the town. Shotts developed during the 19th century as the site of coal mining and the steel industry. In Shotts both coal and iron ore was mined. The Shotts Iron Company established itself as a major employer. In the 20th century the population of the city decreased. In 1951 there were still 11125 persons counted. By 2001, the population decreased gradually to 8235th

Traffic

Shotts is not directly connected to the road network. However, the A71, which connects Edinburgh with Irvine runs, a few kilometers south. The M8 leads north past Shotts. Shotts has its own train station along the Shotts Line, which connects Edinburgh regularly with Glasgow. With the airports of Edinburgh and Glasgow two international airports are within 40 km.
