Since he has a remote Māorihintergrund, he was still nominated in the same year for their national team NZ Māori who played a match against the South African national team during their tour in New Zealand. In this game Going achieved a try for his team. On the same tour, he also played more with North Auckland against the South Africans.

In North Auckland, as well as the Māori he played 1965-1978 often alongside his brothers Ken and Brian. Their specialty was one among themselves executed triple scissor movement to confuse their opponents.

When the British Lions toured New Zealand in 1966, he starred again with the Māori and North Auckland each have a match against the touring team. Because of its demonstrated performance and an injury of his rival Chris Laidlaw one years later, he was appointed for the first time in the squad of the New Zealand national team, known as the All Blacks. His international debut was against Australia on his birthday in 1967 in Wellington. The game could win the All Blacks with 29:9. In the following years was going to be a fixture in the national team of New Zealand. He also belonged to the All Blacks in 1971, for the first and to date only time lost a Test series against the British Lions. The Lions were able to post on their tour in New Zealand two wins and a draw against the All Blacks. However, going to win with his Provincial their game against the Lions. This is where they have a private duel over the next few years with the Welsh Rugby size Gareth Edwards emerged, who also played on the position of scrum Halbs.

Going 1972-1973 was a key player on the tour of the All Blacks to Britain and Ireland. The team won their matches against Wales, England and Scotland. However, towards Ireland could only achieve a draw, which meant that we missed the first Grand Slam in the history of New Zealand rugby. To this end, they should have won all four games against the so-called Home Nations Rugby Unions. In addition, the All Blacks lost on this tour their game against the Barbarians surprising with 11:23 at Cardiff Arms Park.

In 1976 he toured with the All Blacks in South Africa. This tour was a clear failure with three defeats and just one win against the national team of the host.

During the tour of the British Lions in New Zealand in 1977 Going played in two international matches against the Lions. After that he was only a reserve for the last two matches. A year later he resigned from active rugby.

For his achievements in rugby, he was awarded the MBE in 1978. Despite his retirement, he remained the rugby sport as coaches get. He was in charge between 1988 and 1992, the school representative team of his old provincial Association North Auckland, which was renamed in Northland in 1994, before he coached until 1996, the province selection of Northland in the New Zealand National Provincial Championship called Championship ( NPC) in 1993.
