Sidonie of Poděbrady

Sidonie of Bohemia (also: Zdenka of Podiebrad; Czech: Zdenka Poděbrady; * November 14, 1449 Poděbrady ( Podiebrad ); † February 1, 1510 Tharandt ) was a Saxon duchess.

Life

Sidonie, known as Zdenka or Zedena, was the daughter of the Bohemian King George of Podiebrad. On November 11 1459 she kept Eger wedding with Duke Albrecht, which closed on April 25, 1459 the Treaty of Eger was sealed. Zdenka followed her groom to Meissen. The consummation of the marriage ( nuptials ) took place on May 11, 1464 at the castle Tharandt.

The known also by the Prince of prey brothers Ernst and Albrecht lived together with their wives in the Dresden castle, later on the Meissen Castle. 1485 was the division of the country.

Albrecht led war against the Netherlands. Zdenka refused to follow him, and retired to the later Albrecht castle in Meissen, the first European palace, and from 1476 on her dowry the castle Tharandt back.

They had eight children. Four of them died early. It survived Katharina (* July 24, 1468 ), George ( * August 27, 1471 ), Henry the Pious (* March 17, 1473 ) and Friedrich (* October 25, 1474 ).

In 1495 they founded the Church Feast of the Holy Lance, after it had been freed from a stone disease. After 1500 she led Werkausgaben the mystics and theologians Mechthild of Magdeburg (c. 1207-1284/92 ), Gertrude of Helfta ( 1256-1301/02 ) and Mechthild of Hackeborn ( 1241-1298/9 ) from the monastery Helfta.

From Zdenka are to receive a hundred letters (2009 edits ). In one, they praise a book of mystic Johannes Tauler.

Widowed on 12 September 1500 she received her widow's residence at the castle Tharandt, where she also died. Her grave is located in Meissen Cathedral.

In memory of her virtuous and pious life founded the Kingdom of Saxony 1870 Sidonien Order. In Tharandt today the pharmacy is named after her and also has healing springs and a street in the city once wore her name.
