Siegfried I, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst

Siegfried I ( * 1230, † after 25 March 1298 Köthen ) was a reigning sovereign anhaltischer of the family of Ascanians. He reigned from 1252 to 1298.

Siegfried I was the third son of Henry I, Prince of Anhalt, and Ermengarde of Thuringia. On the death of Henry I, the Principality was among his sons Henry II " the fat of " (Anhalt - Aschersleben ), Bernhard I. (Anhalt -Bernburg ) and Siegfried split (Anhalt -Zerbst ).

After the death of the last Ludowingian Landgrave Henry Raspe Siegfried occupied in the course of Thuringia and Hesse, the Palatinate War of Succession county for which he raised as a son Irmingards inheritance rights. Later he resigned over the Wettin on land county, of which he received compensation for it. In 1273 Siegfried was one of the candidates for the election of a king who decided Rudolf of Habsburg for themselves.

Siegfried was with Catherine Birgersdottir of Sweden (1245-1259), the daughter of Birger Jarl, married. Their son, Albrecht I., came after Siegfried's death to his successors.
