Siegmund Gabriel

Siegmund Gabriel ( born November 7, 1851 in Berlin, † March 22, 1924 ) was a German chemist.

Life and work

Siegmund Gabriel studied chemistry and received his doctorate in 1874 in Heidelberg with Robert Wilhelm Bunsen. He was at the Berlin University, where he studied the chemistry of numerous organic nitrogen compounds to 1921 professor. He discovered, among others the ring closure of 2 - bromoethylamine to ethyleneimine, synthesized for the first time pyrimidine, and developed in 1887 named after him Gabriel synthesis of primary alkyl amines from haloalkanes. In 1888 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina.
