Sigbert Wagener

Father Sigbert Wagener, OFM Cap ( born October 29, 1919 in Krefeld as Karl Emil Wagener; † 13 April 2004) was a German Capuchin, priest, teacher, scientist and conservationist. He became known as an entomologist.

Life

After both the elementary and junior high school in Krefeld Wagener attended the private school of the Episcopal monastery in Bensheim and made 1938 the Abitur at the Electoral College Bensheim. Three days later, he became a novice in Stühlingen into the Capuchin Order. He was still drafted as a soldier and was used in North Africa. In 1943 he went into American captivity and spent the rest of the war in Algeria and Canada.

After his release, he took his monastic vows and was ordained in 1948 by Bishop Henry Roleff in Münster. He studied theology and in 1948 the natural sciences at the universities of Münster, Heidelberg and Mainz. After his graduation, he was teaching in 1956, Dr. rer. nat. doctorate. 1957 came Father Sigbert Wagener in Bocholt at St. Joseph High School in the teaching profession, where he especially taught the subjects of biology and chemistry, and joined in 1981 as Director of Studies in retirement. In parallel, he worked as a priest in Bocholt, until the abolition of the monastic community of the Capuchins in the summer of 2000.

Work

Wagener was a dedicated entomologist and had the nickname "The Moth ". He documented on several months of traveling around the world day and night butterflies. During his time in Bocholt was his special attention to the research and preservation of the Burlo - Vardingholter Fens. His butterfly collection of more than 100,000 copies, he donated to the Museum Alexander Koenig in Bonn. He was one of the founding fathers of the Societas Europaea Lepidopterologica (SEL) and represented over 16 years on the board.

Together with Gerhard Barth Hessel van Oorschot and Harry 1995 he published a three-volume work, " The Butterflies of Turkey with special emphasis on neighboring countries," and other scientific works.

In addition Sigbert Wagener was engaged as a consultant in numerous conservation projects, even official advisory board of the State Institute of Ecology, land tenure and Forestry NRW.
