Sigismund Ernst Hohenwart

Sigismund Ernst Hohenwart ( born June 7, 1745 in Celje, Lower Styria, † April 22, 1825 in Linz) was a Catholic priest and Bishop of Linz.

Life

He came from an old noble family Krainer, his father Georg Sigismund Hohenwart was landowner, his mother Maria Aloisia Killau, a Noble of Ehrenstein. He was baptized in the name of Ferdinand Joseph Georg Sigismund. He attended high school in Ljubljana and began his novitiate in 1763 at the Augustinian Canons Gurk. After his profession now Ernst Sigismund, he studied since 1764 at the Catholic University of Graz theology and acquired in 1768 the academic degree of Lic theol .. On 24 June 1768, he was consecrated in the Cathedral of Gorizia to the priest. Stages of his career were novice master, Consistory, Domkustos and 1785 in the diocese of Gurk Domdekan. After transfer of the bishopric to Klagenfurt 1787 he was Vicar General of the Prince Bishop Franz Xaver von Salm- II Reifferscheidt Herb home in Klagenfurt. He also dealt with the natural sciences, and took part in the 1799 first ascent of the Grossglockner. The summit he did not reach, however. There, a height was named after him: "The High Waiting ".

On January 13, 1809, he was appointed by Emperor Francis I of Austria to the Bishop of Linz. However, Pope Pius VII was able to confirm the election until 19 December 1814. He was consecrated on May 7, 1815 by the Archbishop of Vienna, Sigismund Anton von Hohenwart. The enthronement took place in Linz on 15 May 1815. During his reign, he visited all four hundred parishes of his diocese. He was the bishop in charge of the case against the Rev. Martin Boos and had this locked up for a year, and put his opponent as the successor of Boos in a Gallneukirchen. The local emergence of a Protestant congregation was a late consequence of Boos ' work as well as the episcopal reacting to it.

His final resting place Hohenwart in the Old Cathedral in Linz.
