Sigismund Francis, Archduke of Austria

Si ( e) g (is) mouth Franz von Habsburg ( born November 27, 1630 Innsbruck, † June 25, 1665 ibid ) was from 1662 to 1665 sovereign of the Austrian Tyrol and Vorlande and owner of several bishoprics.

Life

Sigismund Franz was born as the second son of Leopold V and Claudia de Medici Princess of Etruria in Innsbruck. His sister was Leopoldine of Tyrol, the second wife of Emperor Ferdinand III.

Without ever having received the priestly or episcopal ordination, was Sigismund Franz in 1646 bishop of Augsburg, in 1653 Bishop of Gurk and 1659 of Trent. He was thus replete with ecclesiastical benefices. When his brother Ferdinand Karl died in 1662 without a male heir, Sigismund Franz applied - against the will of Emperor Leopold I - to succeed as ruler of Tirol. 1663 joined the Erbhuldigungslandtag together in Innsbruck.

Could make him a much better state than Prince Ferdinand Karl His skills and equipment. In Innsbruck, especially his thoughtful way, felt his interest in the welfare and his savings on the tour of the farm very beneficial. He came into stark contrast to his brother. 1665 renounced the Archduke gradually to his ecclesiastical offices and bishoprics, as he had decided to get married.

He applied for the hand of Hedwig of Hesse- Darmstadt, the marriage was not concluded on confessional reasons. On June 3, 1665 he married per procurationem Hedwig Augusta of Sulzbach, but the actual wedding came it no longer, because the Archduke died suddenly on June 25.

With his untimely death in 1665 went out the Tyrolean line of the Habsburgs. Emperor Leopold I took immediately the Tyrol government. Sigismund Franz was buried in the crypt of Innsbruck Jesuit church.
