Silas

Life

Silas was a Jewish Christian and member of the first church in Jerusalem. After there stattgefundenem Apostolic Council Silas was, as a respected man of the community, intended to travel back with Paul to Antioch, to convey the community the decisions of the Council (Acts 15:22). He returned (Acts 15:33) after some time to Jerusalem.

Later, Paul took Silas with as a companion to his second missionary journey, after he had separated after an altercation of Barnabas ( Acts 15:40 ). During the stay in Philippi Silas is locked together with Paul in prison (Acts 16:23 ff). The paths of Silas and Paul split up provisionally in Berea. Paul has to travel further for an insurrection, while Silas with Timothy, another employee of Paul, remains in Berea. In Corinth, Silas is reunited with Paul (Acts 18:5).

How is Silas continues delivered, it is difficult to reconstruct. In the first Epistle of Peter, a Silvanus is mentioned as Secretary, who had drafted the letter for Peter (1 Peter 5:12). Assuming the authenticity of this letter and the statement in the letter closing and identifies you with this Silas Silvanus, so could this verse suggests that Silas has not only worked for Paul, but at certain times even for the apostle Peter.

Among the texts of the Nag Hammadi library there is a Coptic work entitled The Teachings of Silvanus (NHC VII, 4). This script was written but most likely not until the 2nd or 3rd century, and thus could not be on the Silas mentioned in the New Testament attributed. It is classified under the rather broad category of pseudonymous writings, which are commonly found in the Nag Hammadi library.
