Silesian Interurbans

The tram in the Upper Silesian industrial district is the Tramwaje Śląskie SA operated and is the tram network of the city of Katowice and the neighboring large cities in the Upper Silesian industrial area in Silesia in southern Poland. The tram network in the region is one of the largest networks in the world. All lines are part of the local transport association KZK GOP.

Basic Information

As of March 2006, the network comprised a total length of 342 kilometers, in which perverse 33 lines with 371 vehicles. In addition, there were five depots, namely bendin Chorzów Batory, Bytom - Stroszek, Gliwice and Katowice- Zawodzie.

History

The history of the Silesian tram began in 1894 with the construction of steam-powered interurban tram from Gleiwitz to German Piekar with a track width of 785 millimeters and a length of 36.5 kilometers. Already in 1898, the Electrification of the railway was carried out. 1912, the first line was umgespurt to standard gauge in Katowice. A built in 1913 was 9.2 km long stretch of the municipal tram Bytom Bytom from over Karf after Michowitz was also built in standard gauge. By 1928, the network was expanded Beuthener 18.25 km length. Opened in 1928 in Sosnowiec a tram. Between 1928 and 1936 most of the narrow gauge lines were converted to standard gauge in the network, but only in 1952 the gauging has been completed.

In 1922 the border between Germany and Poland was re-established and slashed the conurbation and thus the rail network in a German western and eastern Poland. 1937, the last cross-border tram connection has been set.

During World War II the German occupiers this tram networks put together to form a complete network with a uniform operation, 1940, the number system was introduced, which consists of changes to the present. After the nationalization of the operation began in 1951, especially in the 1970s, an increased development of the network, connected to the renovation of the important Altstrecken. In the 1980s, then some parts of old routes were shut down. In the late 1990s, the expansion of the line from Bytom to Katowice on light rail similar level began. However, still there are large parts of the road network in poor condition.

Fleet

For use are primarily railcars of the Polish type Konstal 105Na (314 pieces), built 1973-1992. For the light rail route 2000/2001 of 17 vehicles were purchased by the French type Citadis. On the line 38 in Bytom are also two war tramcars in use. From 2013 to 2014, 30 new PESA 2012N Twist to be procured. In addition, were used over the 25 Main E1 from Vienna and 15 points from Frankfurt.
