Silverton (New South Wales)

Silverton is a 1890 founded, small town in New South Wales, Australia. It is located about 25 kilometers north- west of Broken Hill near the border with South Australia. As the town's name suggests, was once dug here for silver; the city flourished and grew. However, when a much larger silver deposits were discovered in the near Broken Hill, Silverton began the descent. From about 3000 inhabitants in 1901 before there were only 300 left. More and more people moved from Silverton to Broken Hill. Today, the population of Silverton is officially at 89 people (as of 2006), yet Silverton has kept the official status of a city. On the whole, Silverton today consists of two galleries and a hotel, the Silverton Hotel.

Silverton is located in the Unincorporated Far West, the sparsely populated region in the northwest of the state of New South Wales, which has no own local administration.
