Silvia Cartwright

Silvia Rose Cartwright (nee Poulter, born November 7, 1943 in Dunedin, New Zealand) was a judge at the High Court (Supreme Court ) and from April 2001 to August 2006 the second female Governor-General of New Zealand.

In 1967 she did a Bachelor in Law at the University of Otago. In 1989 she was the first female judge on the New Zealand Chief District Court and appointed in 1993 as the first woman in the New Zealand High Court. The University of Waikato in 1994 awarded her an honorary doctorate.

Since 2006, Cartwright one of ten international judges at the hybrid Criminal Tribunal for the Investigation of crimes committed during the period from 1975 to 1979 Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, based in Phnom Penh.

In 1989 she was awarded the Order of the British Order of the British Empire and in 2001 with the New Zealand Order of Merit. She is married.
