Simon Barrington-Ward

Simon Barrington -Ward KCMG ( born May 27, 1930 in London ) is a British Anglican theologian and university lecturer. He was from 1985 to 1997 Bishop of Coventry in the Church of England.

Life

Barrington -Ward was the son of a British journalist and newspaper publisher Robert Barrington -Ward (1891-1948) and his wife Margaret born Adele Barrington -Ward († 1975). His father was from 1941 to 1948 editor of the newspaper The Times. He attended Eton College and studied theology at Magdalene College, University of Cambridge. There he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts ( Oxbridge and Dublin). In 1949 he became a lieutenant in the Air Force ( Pilot Officer ) in the Royal Air Force. After his military service he was employed until his priestly ordination, as a teacher and lecturer at various theological colleges as a high school teacher. From 1953 to 1954 he was a lecturer at the Free University of Berlin. From 1954 to 1956 he taught at the Westcott House Anglican Theological College in Cambridge. In 1956 he was dean. In 1956 he was ordained in the Diocese of Ely as a priest. From 1956 to 1960 he worked as a chaplain at Magdalene College, Cambridge University. From 1960 to 1963 he was editor and university lecturer at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria. From 1963 to 1969 he was a Fellow and Dean at Magdalene College, Cambridge University. From 1969 to 1974 he was chairman ( Principal ) of the Selly Oak Colleges, a consortium of theological educational institutions, in Crowther Hall, Birmingham, in the county of Warwickshire. From 1975 to 1985 he was Honorarkanoniker ( Honorary Canon, Canon ) at the Derby Cathedral. From 1983 to 1985 he was chaplain to the Queen.

In 1985 he was ordained a bishop. From 1985 to 1997 he was, as the successor of John Gibbs, the 7th bishop of Coventry. In 1997, he went into retirement. His successor as Bishop of Coventry was Colin Bennetts. In his retirement he has been active since 1997 as a volunteer auxiliary bishop ( Honorary Assistant Bishop) in the Diocese of Ely ( Honorary Assistant Bishop of Ely ). Barrington -Ward is as emeriertierter Episcopal chaplain to the University of Cambridge and Honorary auxiliary Kaplan ( Honorary assistant chaplain ) of Magdalene College. He is since 1987 an Honorary Fellow of Magdalene College. He is also Chaplain of Ridley Hall College, Cambridge.

Barrington -Ward is the author of several theological books: Love Will Out (1988 ), Why God? (1993 ), The Jesus Prayer (1996) and Praying the Jesus Prayer Together ( 2001).

In 1963 he married his wife, Dr. Jean Caverhill Taylor, the daughter of Dr. Hugh William Young Taylor. From derEhe Two daughters were born. He lives in Cambridge.

Membership in the House of Lords

Barrington -Ward was in his capacity until his retirement in early October 1997 as Bishop of Coventry as a clergyman Lord the House of Lords as Bishop of Coventry from July 1991.

In 1988 he received an honorary doctorate as Honorary Doctor of Letters ( D.Litt. ) Of the University of Warwick. Barrington -Ward was appointed in the annual New Year's Honours List for Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George 2001; previously he was there already prelate ( Prelate ) been.
