Simon Episcopius

Simon Episcopius (actually Simon Bischop, born January 8, 1583 in Amsterdam, † April 4, 1643 in Amsterdam ) was an Arminian theologian and professor of Remonstrant Seminar at the University of Amsterdam.

Life

Episcopius studied at Leiden and Franeker. In 1610 he became a preacher in Bleiswijk, a community in South Holland, but returned in 1612 already returned to the University of Leiden, where he taught as a professor from that date.

Already during his studies he had come with the teaching of Jacobus Arminius in conjunction, in 1610 he was a signatory to the Remonstrantie and performed at the Synod of Dort as a spokesman of the Remonstrants on. As the Synod condemned Arminianism in April 1619 also Episcopius was banished and first went to Waalwijk and later to Antwerp. In Antwerp he soon had contact about Jan Wtenbogaert and Nicholas Grevinchoven, with whom he took over the management of Remonstrantschgereformeerde Broederschap.

1621 Episcopius went to Cologne and from there soon to Antwerp, then to Rouen and Paris. In the Netherlands, he returned in 1625 and became a preacher in Rotterdam. 1629 he moved to Amsterdam and was here in 1634 first professor of Remonstrant seminar.
