SIMpad

SIMpad is a term introduced by Siemens Switzerland in 2001 to market Tablet PC. The development was developed by Keith & Koep.

It is designed with a touch-sensitive touch screen for operation with a pen and can be used for example as a web pad, e- text reader or for wardriving. It is as universal remote also part of the technology in Future Life House.

Models

There are several models, but of which no more is produced:

  • SL4 (model S842 ): From Siemens itself marketed model with 64 MB RAM and 32 MB Flash
  • SLC (model S843 ): How SL4, but additionally contains a DECT modem with which you can surf on certain Siemens ISDN PBXs.
  • CL4 (model C421 ): Small version of the SLC with only half as much memory, but also with DECT Modem: 32 MB RAM and 16 MB Flash. This model does not have a PCMCIA slot.
  • T-Sinus Pad: A sold by the telecom version of the CL4, but with a PCMCIA slot. It also has a DECT modem.
  • WP50 (model C420 ): A marketed by the Swisscom variant of CL4 with DECT modem, but also without a PCMCIA slot.

Hardware

All versions include:

  • Processor Intel StrongARM SA as a -1110 206 MHz
  • A 8.4 -inch TFT screen with 800 × 600 pixels
  • A slot for 16- bittige PCMCIA cards, not in WP50
  • A USB client port as type B socket
  • An IrDA interface
  • A serial interface ( in a proprietary format - Lumberg jack)
  • A headphone and microphone jack ( with the socket of the serial interface )
  • A mono speaker
  • A microphone not in CL4
  • A lithium- ion battery with 2800 mAh; the models CL4 T-Sinus and WP50 with only 1400 mAh capacity

All units have a weight of about 1 kg with dimensions of 180 × 263 × 28 mm.

Software

The operating systems were Windows CE Version 2.12 ( CL4 ), 3.0 (all models) or 4.0 (only SL4 and SLC, also known as CE.net ) included. Updates on Windows CE 4.1 and 4.2 are available on the Internet, or commercially available.

Since it is discontinued models at all SIMpads, no manufacturer support is now available and it will appear no more updates. In the used market, however, devices and accessories are still widely available and there are many more information on the Web. Furthermore, the Familiar project provides a rating based on Open Embedded Linux port for all SIMpad models.
