Sings the Ballads of the True West is the 21st studio album by the American country singer Johnny Cash. It appeared in 1965 on Columbia Records as a double album and was produced by Don Law and Frank Jones.

It is a concept album deals on the cash, the myth of the Wild West.

Content

The songs from the album are about the wild west and show the life of the cowboys in this time. In addition to new pieces by himself and Carl Perkins, Maybelle Carter and Shel Silverstein cash also took some American traditionals such as Sweet Betsy from Pike, Bury Me Not on the Lone Prairie, Sam Hall and Streets of Laredo on.

Two of the songs have historical backgrounds: Hardin Would not Run was about the famous gunfighter John Wesley Hardin, who has already appeared in a story on Cash's album Ride This Train. The song Mister Garfield is about the assassination of former U.S. President James A. Garfield on July 2, 1881.

Subsequent admissions of individual songs

Six of the songs were re-recorded by cash later, the old Traditional I Ride had already been taken at Old Paint under the title Slow Rider Ride This Train to five years earlier.

The written by Silverstein 25 Minutes to Go tells the story of a prisoner who is counting down the minutes to his execution. A new recording of the piece was released on the album At Folsom Prison in 1968 was occurred for cash before inhaftiertem audience.
