Sir George Staunton, 1st Baronet

Sir George Leonard Staunton ( * April 19, 1737 in Galway, Ireland, † January 14, 1801 in London) was a traveler, physician and diplomat in the service of Britain. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Staunton ".

Life and work

Staunton studied at the University of Montpellier and medicine came in 1762 as a physician to the West Indies, where he became secretary of Lord George Macartney, the governor of the island of Grenada. This Staunton accompanied to the East Indies, as Macartney took over the governorship of Madras on behalf of the British East India Company. On the legation travel Macartney to China ( 1792-1794 ) accompanied him Staunton as Secretary of Legation and was also the title of Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary. On this trip, he watched the Chinese custom to provide tea with orange flavor, later known as Earl Grey. Today, Earl Grey is however provided with bergamot.

George Leonard Staunton died on 14 January 1801 in London. His son George Thomas Staunton made ​​later also in the East India Company career, toured India and became a deputy in the British Parliament.
