Sisu KB-45

The Sisu KB - 45 is a 1965 imported trucks of the Finnish vehicle manufacturer Suomen Autoteollisuus ( SAT). The two-axle, four-wheel -drive truck with a payload of 4000 kg was developed on behalf of the Finnish Defence Forces. Successor is almost identical Sisu A-45/AH-45.

Planning

The KB -45 is designed for the tasks of the light infantry of the Finnish Defence Forces. The project coordinator was the lead engineer Uoti Hartikainen. The first prototype was built in the SAT test department in the Fleming Road, Helsinki. It was completed in March 1964. Prototype was the last truck with SATs own AMI gasoline engine. The axles came from Kirkstall. In an early stage of development he was as Proto, which was derived from prototyyppi (prototype) called.

After the first prototype of the Finnish armed forces suddenly changed the specifications; the wheelbase should be shortened by 30 cm. The reason for this change were measurements of the armed forces after which the average mutual distance of trees was lower than expected in the Finnish woods. By shortening the wheelbase there were great difficulties in the transmission assembly, after which the main and reduction gear had to be moved. The shorter distance of the intermediate shaft had to be replaced by a technically demanding tooth sockets solution. Another requirement of the armed forces was the replacement of the gasoline engine with a diesel engine, which is not also turned out to be unproblematic. Due to the small capacity and the cargo area mounting system needed to be changed. With the final solutions, but were satisfied with the armed forces.

Production and use

The first 18 vehicles were handed over in August 1965, the Finnish armed forces and mainly used to tow howitzers and anti-aircraft guns. In total they got 83 KB -45 trucks, two of which were equipped as a fire truck. The successor A-45/AH-45 was similarly structured. The biggest difference was that the Kirkstall axles were replaced by SAT own axes. At the same time the production of Karis was moved to Hämeenlinna, in the old factory of Vanajan Autotehdas.

The KB -45 trucks were replaced by the new Sisu A2045 in the Finnish armed forces.

Specifications

The KB -45 is equipped with a Leyland series diesel engine has a power band of 1000 to 2400 min-1 and 135 hp.

About a fully synchronized five-speed gearbox, the two axes are driven. In addition, the vehicle does not have a two- speed reduction gear and the two axles are provided with lockable differentials which have longitudinal leaf springs and double-acting shock absorber.

The flexible frame allows torsional rotations, so that all the wheels have contact with the ground in difficult terrain. The cabin is made of fiberglass and steel and is connected at three points with the frame. The cargo area has a length of 4.28 meters and space for 25 people. It is connected at four points to the frame.

The winch pulling force is 6 tons and is equipped with a torque limiter.

Some vehicles were equipped with the hydraulic trailer power transmission system Sisu Nemo to improve the off-road capability for trailer ride. The system was under the name Two-In -One ( "two- in-one " ) markets.

Properties

The largest payload in the field is 2300 kg and 4000 kg on the road. The front overhang is 1,300 mm long and 1,000 mm rear. The turning radius is 7.6 m tall and the top speed is 90 km / h

The good road characteristics are due to the centrally placed engine, which allows a uniform wheel load distribution, even in rough terrain. One of the wheels can be jacked up to a meter, while the remaining three still touching the ground. During the tests, a gradeability of 60 % was achieved and a side corridor of 45%.
