Skelmorlie Aisle

Skelmorlie Aisle is a mausoleum in the Scottish town of Largs in North Ayrshire Unitary Authority. In 1971 the building was added to the Scottish lists of monuments in the highest category A monument. Furthermore, the structure together with the surrounding cemetery as Scheduled Monument is classified. With the Brisbane aisle is another Grade II listed mausoleum nearby.

Description

The building is located in the center of the old cemetery of Largs. With the coming of the 1636 building, it was formerly a segment of the transept of the Holy Columba of Iona consecrated church, but this was demolished in 1802. Only this part of the building was preserved. On the south wall still today closed pointed arch can be seen that once formed the passage to the crossing. The elongated structure consists of blocks of stone that were fitted to a layer of masonry. The entrance is on the west side. Two similar window as they occur in the opposite east side, flanking him. In a rectangular panel decorated with Christian motifs is embedded. On the north side, however, a tracery of lancet windows is installed. The building closes with a slated pitched roof.
