The favorite was offered from March 1989, both in Germany and in the GDR in small numbers. Priced he moved here well above the Wartburg 353 Under the name Forman gave it in 1990, a station wagon variant.

In Germany two variants of a 4-cylinder OHV gasoline engine with 1289 cc capacity each were available: a 40 kW ( 54 hp) payable execution and a 50 kW (68 hp) engine. Both were based on the same engine block, compared to the less powerful but had the more powerful engine to make some changes. These related mainly to control part, injection, manifold, camshaft, piston and the cylinder head ( better guidance of the intake ports ). In some exporting countries, there was a 1137- cc version of the same engine with 38 kW ( 52 PS) in the model 115

After the engines were initially fitted with carburettors, a Monomotronic - injection system was used from 1993. The 54 -horsepower engine was designed for regular gasoline. Consumption peaked depending on driving style between 6 and 7.5 liters per 100 km. The revised engine with the central injection was characterized by a reduced fuel consumption, fuel consumption less than 6 liters per 100 km could be reached quite. The motor has a bottom camshaft ( camshaft side in the engine block ), which is driven via a timing chain. Only the 54 -hp machine was equipped with a regulated (135 LE / LSE) or unregulated (135 L / LS) catalyst.

According to the original plans, it was a closed set with a short version ( 781, favorite), a limousine ( 782 ), a coupé ( 783 ) Estate ( 785 Forman ), Pick -up ( 787 ) Transportation (786 ) and ambulance ( 788 ). Were realized only versions 781, 785 and 787 The first models were prone to rust, the rust often began on the tailgate and the rear wheel wells. The favorite / Forman was considered insensitive and robust. After the 1991 completed the acquisition of Skoda by VW, it was released in 1993 to numerous technical and quality improvements. In the course of the model cycle small improvements have been made on the bodywork, for example on the grille.

At the end of 1994, the favorite / Forman was replaced by the Škoda Felicia.
