The name Roomster is a composite of the English terms Room and Roadster portmanteau or portmanteau word, which is to suggest the practical utility of a minivan with the driving characteristics of a sporty roadster. The prototype has been presented with sliding rear doors, but did not find any use in the production version.

The Roomster is based on body and technology components of the Škoda Octavia and the Škoda Fabia II In previous developments the Executive Committee in Germany Škoda had denied the mixing of platforms. It is manufactured in the Czech Republic in Mladá Boleslav and Kvasiny.

The design was awarded the red dot award.

Competitors are high roof station wagon, which usually have in the back of sliding doors, and minivans, which are usually dimensioned slightly smaller than the Roomster, as the Roomster occupies the niche between high-roof station wagons and minivans. The Škoda Roomster marketing department divides the interior in the front " driving room " and the rear "Living Room".

Since April 2007, a van version of the Roomster is offered under the name Škoda Škoda practice. This version is externally identical to the passenger version, the rear side windows are replaced with painted sheet metal, and the rear part of the interior has no seating.
