The term minivan is derived from " Van ", and also of " compact MPV " and " Microvan ". The special features of a minivan compared to a small car is one of a higher roof. Minivans are popular with craft shops, but increasingly also in many children, and travel-loving families. Hence the jocular term " diaper bomber " comes for these types of vehicles. As usual with the names of types of vehicles, there are also problems of definition to related categories of vehicles, especially small car or even the compact class, as such terms are largely influenced by the media ( including most notably the advertising industry). Minivans are the size between 3.70 m and 4.10 m. The vehicle roof usually has a height from 1,55 m.

Predecessor was the design study AutonovaFam, which originated in the 1960s at the Ulm School of Design, and the study of Lancia Gamma Micro in the late 1970s. In series, the idea was only in the early 1980s by Japanese manufacturers, such as with the Nissan Prairie from 1982.
