History

Sky Radio went on September 30, 1988 as a self-proclaimed " spin-off " of then- TV channel Sky Channel broadcast. It belonged to the News Corporation, among others, owns the British media The Sun, The Times and until 1991 also of the Sky Channels. Like all private radio stations was not allowed to be broadcast on VHF and cable and Sky Radio, as this was only permitted at the time in the Netherlands, the public broadcasters. Therefore, the program was officially sent from abroad and could thus be broadcast on the Dutch cable network.

In the following years, the number of listeners of Radio Sky rose ever. The sender therefore tried several times to get a broadcast license, but this was rejected again and again. The situation deteriorated further, since the transmitters were always lower frequencies assigned and the transmitting locations of the public were protected.

Between July and December 1992 Sky Radio brought a new additional radio station name Hit Radio. In December 1992, the station was replaced by Radio 538.

After long legal negotiations could Sky Radio on 15 September 1995 also go on the frequency 100.7 FM terrestrial broadcasting. In autumn 1996, it has seen the greatest success of the station's history, as it had more listeners than Radio 3 (now 3FM ), then the most listened to radio station in the Netherlands.

In January 1998, Sky Radio 100.4 FM got to add a second frequency. A month later, the station celebrated with a big celebration its 10th anniversary. In March 2001, the government decided that the transmission frequencies are to be awarded in an auction to the highest bidder. The private broadcasters and their listeners felt unfairly treated because they could not pay as much money as the public broadcaster. Due to this resistance, the auction was canceled. In December 2002 it was decided that the frequencies are re-assigned, regardless of whether it is that of private or public broadcasters. On 26 May 2003 Sky was assigned 101 FM radio frequency range. Since then, the station Sky Radio 101 FM is called. In March 2005 Sky Radio got a new design and a completely new logo, which gave new impetus to the transmitter again.

On 1 February 2006 Sky Radio from the Sky Radio Group was purchased. The News Corporation sold Sky Radio 101 FM, Radio Veronica, Classic FM and Sky Radio Hessen in Germany to a consortium led by the Telegraaf Media Groep.
