Skylon Tower

The Skylon Tower is a 1964/1965 erbauter observation tower in reinforced concrete construction in Niagara Falls, Canada. The tower stands near the observation tower built three years earlier Konica Minolta Tower.

Description

The Skylon Tower was opened on 6 October 1965, has two restaurants for up to 270 people and a boutique. The tower has a total height of 160 meters. The tower stands on a base that consists of a multi-storey building with a hexagonal floor plan. The foundation establishes to 15 m below ground and weighs 6000 tons. The Skylon Tower is located on a small hill (229 meters above Niagara Falls ) in downtown Niagara Falls on the western edge of the Queen Victoria Park around 200 meters from the shores of the Niagara River at the height of Niagara Falls.

From the observation deck of the tower one has an overview of the entire Niagara Falls and the Niagara River. On a clear day the shore of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie can be detected. The visibility is estimated at up to 130 km on a clear day. The observation deck can be achieved by three yellow exterior elevators in 52 seconds. The staircase has 662 steps to the top. The upper dome of the tower basket has a diameter of 32.9 meters and weighs 200 tons. The tower shaft tapers from 22.1 m to 10.2 m in diameter to below the dome. Much like the CN Tower, the Skylon Tower on three cantilevered rib-like feet. The shaft was finished molded from reinforced concrete continuously in layers around the clock in 38 days and grew so about every 10 minutes to 25 millimeters.
