SkyRoads (video game)

In Skyroads is a 3D -like Jump ' n' Run game from the year 1993. It was developed under the name Blue Moon by Estonian programmers Jaan Tallinn, who was later involved in the development of Skype and Kazaa.

The aim of the game is to get a flightless spaceplane to the finish by jumping from platform to platform without falling off or burn off the fuel. The game principle invented Blue Moon in 1989 with the game Kosmonauts - with limited success. Skyroads however, found as a shareware version in the then newly emerging Internet proliferation. Today, the full game is available as freeware available for download.

Game

Although the cockpit ( with speed, fuel, oxygen, gravity and progress bar ) is always in the picture, you can see the car from a third-person perspective from behind. It can only move sideways and jumping upwards while the bottomless, mainly composed of landscape blocks under the vehicle moved through to the players. Although the game can be played with a joystick or mouse, but is traditionally played with the arrow keys ( direction and speed) in conjunction with the spacebar ( jump ). In each level there is a different high gravity (from 100 to 1700), the effect on the jump height. In normal gravity, the soil behaves elastically and the slider springs after jumps several times after. When the space shuttle out of gas, it collided with an obstacle or falls from a platform, the level will be restarted.

The color of the platform shows their respective properties:

  • Dark gray: space shuttle controls neither left nor right.
  • Dark green: spaceplane brakes.
  • Light green: spaceplane accelerated.
  • Bright red: spaceplane explodes, except at the very edge.
  • Blue: oxygen and fuel to be replenished.

At the end of each level, you drive through a tunnel that leads into the empty space.

Successor

1994 " Skyroads XMAS Special" was released with new, more difficult levels. However, it was never as popular as the original. Meanwhile, there are a number of clones, such as " Tasty Static " (even with level editor ) and "Orbit - Hopper ", the real 3D (about OpenGL) use.
