SliTaz GNU/Linux

SliTaz is an independently developed, minimal Linux distribution with a complete graphic interface and a separate package system. SliTaz is one of the smallest Linux distributions and is one of the smallest modern operating systems in general with a full graphical user interface, the iso image has a size of about 30 MB. The name is an acronym for Simple Light Incredible Temporary Autonomous Zone.

Features

SliTaz can be booted as a live system or installed on the hard drive, when booting the entire system is loaded into RAM. If you booted from a CD -Rom, which can be removed after booting, the drive will then be available again. Since the system is running in RAM, you can work smoothly even on old computers, programs start quickly on computers with slow hard drives. SliTaz provides a complete and fast graphical interface with minimal hardware requirements.

Hardware Requirements

The current version requires at least 256 MB Ram. Installed on the hard disk fails the system uses about 100 MB. For older computers that do not comply in particular with respect to the capacity of the RAM to the minimum requirements, there is a smaller version, the Loram version. There are Loram version for systems with 24 MB, 32 MB or 64 MB Ram.

Practice

To get the full functionality when operating from a CD -ROM to your personal documents and settings to external media such as a USB flash drive or a hard disk can store.

SliTaz can be expanded via its own package system. About the Package Manager Tazpkg, which now has a GUI software can be easily managed. More than 2300 packages in the stable and 2400 packages in the cooking version are available in the archives.

Versions

SliTaz is published in two versions: one stable ( currently 4.0), and a cooking version. Both are fully functional. SliTaz Cooking is a snapshot of the current development of SliTaz. It is fully usable and allows testing the latest changes and embedded applications.

It is also possible to create your own modified live CD, called Flavors by the integrated tool Tazlito.

SliTaz 1.0

SliTaz 1.0 is the first stable release, which was published. It uses JWM (Joe 's Window Manager) as a window manager, emelfm2 and lxpanel. The kernel is version 2.6.24.2.

SliTaz 2.0

The Linux kernel is version 2.6.25.5. There are binutils- 2:17:50, glibc- 2.7 and gcc- 4.2.3 toolchain as used. Furthermore, there is also a support for NTFS.

SliTaz 3.0

Includes the Linux kernel version 2.6.30.6.

SliTaz 4.0

Includes the Linux kernel version 2.6.37

SliTaz Cooking

The current Cooking version was released on 25 March 2012. The Linux kernel version is 2.6.37. There are binutils- 2.21, glibc 2.13 and gcc- 4.5.2 toolchain as used.

SliTaz Loram

With this release, developers are offering a live CD for computers that do not meet the minimum memory requirements. This version was created with Tazlito.
