Slot Canyon

Slot Canyon is the American name for a narrow gorge created by flowing water.

Slot Canyons are a typical landscape feature of the Colorado Plateau in the southwestern United States. Easily erodible sedimentary layers of sandstone and the dry climate favor the formation of the canyons. Characteristic are flash floods (English: flash floods ), by most short summer thunderstorms flow large amounts of water in a short time through the otherwise dry gorge.

Examples of known, easily accessible slot canyons are Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon near Page, Arizona, and the Zion Narrows in Utah. The canyons of the Colorado Plateau gained in recent years, increasing importance for tourism and are very popular with photographers. A German equivalent for the term slot canyon is the gorge.
