Smit International NV is a long-standing Dutch company that has gained through his work in the field of tractor services, salvage of shipwrecks and especially because of the use by maritime disasters international notoriety. The management of port terminals is running for foreign companies.

History

The company was founded in 1842 by Fop Smit; it specialized in over the years more and more on towage and built many tractors. At the beginning of the 20th century, the company got competition from L. Smit & Co.; However, the two companies merged in 1923 to Smit International. In time, maritime salvage operations were part of the company profile. So remote Smit 1957 41 shipwrecks from the Suez Canal.

Since 2010, Smit is part of the Royal Boskalis Westminster Group.

Group structure

Smit Group consists of four parts:

  • Smit Harbour Towage, port and tug Service Smit
  • Smit Terminals, full package service from the tractor to the management of port terminals
  • Smit Salvage (formerly Smit- Tak ), environmental protection, ship wreck and rescue service
  • Smit Transport & Heavy Lift, logistics service for heavy goods.

Other companies in which Smit International is involved:

  • Smitwijs, joint venture with, among other things Wijsmuller for tug.
  • Smit Lloyd supply of offshore installations.
