Smith Newell Penfield
Smith Newell Penfield ( born April 4, 1837 in Oberlin / Ohio; † January 7, 1920 in New York City ) was an American composer.
Penfield studied at Oberlin College and in New York, then in Leipzig with Ignaz Moscheles, Carl Reinecke, Ernst Friedrich Richter and Moritz Hauptmann. He worked as a music teacher in Rochester and founded the Mozart Club and the Conservatory in Savannah. In 1885 he became president of The Music Teachers National Association.
He composed a setting of the 18th Psalm, an overture, a string quintet, organ and piano pieces, choral works and songs.
