Smolenice

Smolenice ( Smolenitz German, Hungarian Szomolány ) is located approximately 17 kilometers north- west of a town Trnava in Slovakia.

It consists of the towns of Smolenice and Smolenická Nová Ves, which until 1948 Neštich ( Neustift, Hungarian Jánostelek ) and was incorporated in 1960.

Smolenice was first mentioned in records in 1256 and is primarily known through the castle Smolenice. A Renaissance church was built from 1642 to 1644. From 1705 to 1707 the town was occupied by the Turks.

West of the town is the Drina cave, which is currently seen as the only show cave in the entire western Slovakia.
