Sobibór, Lublin Voivodeship

Sobibor [ sɔb Ibur ʲ ] is a village in eastern Poland, which is a part of the community Włodawa, Włodawski powiat, in the Lublin Voivodeship. Sobibor has around 350 inhabitants.

Geography

Sobibor is ten kilometers south-east of Włodawa on the Bug River on the border with Ukraine. South of the town lies the territory placed under conservation Sobiborski Landscape Park.

History

Sobibor extermination camp

Near the village was located during the German occupation of Poland, the extermination camp Sobibor ( 1942-1943 ). The number of predominantly Jewish murdered in Sobibor camp is estimated at 150,000 to 250,000 people. It was built by the SS as a second, much larger extermination camp in Belzec during the Aktion Reinhardt and was at that time the name of SS-Sonderkommando.

The 600 or so at this time still living prisoners of this German concentration camp liberated himself on 14 October 1943 an uprising against the SS guards itself After the uprising in the Treblinka extermination camp Treblinka on 2 August 1943, the Sobibor uprising was headed by Alexander Pechersky and Leon Feldhendler the second successful resistance in the extermination camps. Administrative history

Through an administrative reform of the place came 1975 on the Chelm Voivodeship. After a renewed reform and the dissolution of the Province from 1999 Sobibor was part of the Lublin Voivodeship.
