Sobotište

Sobotište ( German Sobotischt, older even Freischütz, Hungarian Ószombat - to 1907 Szobotist ) is a municipality in western Slovakia in the Zahorie. It lies at the foot of the White Carpathian Mountains on the river Teplica, about seven kilometers north of Senica and 13 kilometers west of Myjava away.

History

Sobotište was mentioned in 1251 for the first time and was in the Middle Ages a market town. In 1546 here was one of the Bruderhof originating from the radical Reformation Anabaptist Hutterites. The Bruderhof was the first in Slovakia established Hutterite farm and the only one who remained all the time the Hutterite movement in Central Europe to 1762. Even after the recatholicization many of the Slovaks of the Anabaptists and Hutterites now katholizierten remained in place. 1770 a woolen manufactory was founded.

The municipality also includes the lying in the White Carpathians Javorec district, composed of several small settlements (Slovak Kopanice ).

After the place is named the asteroid discovered 1999 26401 Sobotište.
