Södermalm

Södermalm is a central district of Stockholm. It was created on 1 January 2007 by merging the former boroughs Maria- Gamla stan and Katarina -Sofia. The municipality is formed by the districts of Gamla Stan, Riddarholmen, Långholmen, Reimersholme, Södermalm and Södra Hammarbyhamnen. In addition, part of the archipelago Årsta holmar to the municipality, which is geographically allocated to the district Årsta, which, however, lies in the district Enskede - Årsta Vantör.

The former district Katarina -Sofia had before its inclusion in Södermalm about 43,000 inhabitants. The name of the district was referring to the two parishes that are located here. The district included the areas of the island Åsön that lie east of the road Gotgatan and the district Södra Hammarbyhamnen.

The district Maria- Gamla stan had before his resolution about 62,000 inhabitants. The district included the areas of Gamla Stan, Riddarholmen, Långholmen, Årsta holmar and Reimersholme and the areas of the island Åsön that lie west of the Gotgatan.

In the southern Södermalm is also the trendy district SoFo.

Riddarholmen

Riddarholmen is an inland island in Lake Mälaren, which is adjacent to the west of Gamla Stan. It forms the geographically smallest district of Stockholm. In terms of population Riddarholmen is the second lowest point. 2004, reported only two people. But there is a larger number of cultural and administrative buildings. Södermalm

Södermalm, colloquially called Söder, is one of the central parts of the city of Stockholm. Långholmen

The small island Långholmen housed a large prison, which was created in 1724 and until 1978 was decommissioned. The prison was not demolished, but the main building was converted into a hotel and a hostel. Other parts of the prison system are home to a community college and flats.

Reimersholme

Reimersholme is a 16 acre island in the west of the borough. It is connected with the district of Södermalm by a 39 meter long and 13 meter wide bridge. In the 1860s, here is a woolen mill was built in the prisoners of the prison Långholmen worked. The factory went bankrupt in 1934 and as residential buildings were built from 1942 onwards.

Södra Hammarbyhamnen

Södra Hammarbyhamnen and the district of Södermalm, are separated from each other by a lake, which is connected by canals with the Baltic Sea and Lake Mälaren.
