Solomon Mikhlin

Solomon Grigorjewitsch Michlin (Russian Соломон Григорьевич Михлин, English transliteration Solomon Grigor'evich Mikhlin; born April 23, 1908 in Belarus; † August 30, 1990 in Leningrad) was a Russian mathematician who with partial differential equations, integral equations, mathematical physics and numerical itself mathematics employed.

Life and work

Michlin studied in Leningrad, where in 1929 he took his degree in 1935 and his habilitation (Russian doctorate ). He was from 1937 professor, first at the Seismological Institute of the Academy of Sciences in Leningrad, then at the University of Alma Ata undab 1944 at the Leningrad University. Michlin is known by numerous monographs and textbooks on differential equations and integral equations of mathematical physics and methods of their numerical treatment.

His doctoral include Vladimir Mazya and Siegfried Prößdorf ( professor in Chemnitz), who translated many books of Michlin into German.

He was a member of the Accademia dei Lincei and honorary doctorate from the University of Chemnitz ( 1968).
