The University Soongsil University or Sungsil (English Soongsil University, SSU ) is a private Christian university in South Korea. It was founded in 1897 in Pyongyang, making it the first modern university in Korea. Since 1957, the campus in Sangdo -dong, Dongjak -gu, Seoul is located.

History

The University was founded on 10 October 1897 as a private school in Pyongyang by William M. Baird, a missionary of the Northern Presbyterian Church of America. In 1900, the private school to five years in middle school, and in October 1901 she was renamed Sungsil - Hakdang ( Kor. 숭실 학당, dt Sungsil Academy ). The name Sungsil means about: "[God ] to honor ( 숭, solution) with truth and loyalty ( 실, sil ) ".

In 1905 the Academy lessons for high school one. In 1906, Presbyterian and Methodist missionary organizations involved in school management and established a department of higher education. The Academy was given the new name of Union Christian College ( 합성 숭실 대학 ). This was the beginning of the four-year university system in Korea.

1912 authorized the Japanese colonial administration, the university Sungsil, and in 1925 the college was changed but the humanities vocational school, technical school Sungsil (Japanese崇 实 专门 学校, Sūjitsu Semmon Gakko; 숭실 전문 학교 ) said. On 4 March 1938, the trade school closed in protest against the demands of worship at the Shinto shrine.

In April 1954 after the armistice of the Korean War, the university Sungsil was re-established in South Korea. In June 1957 she moved to the present Sangdodong campus in Seoul. In 1971, the University and the College Sungsil Daejeon were ( 숭전 대학 ) assembled (not the present-day Daejeon University ) for the University Sungjeon. In December 1971, she received the university status. In December 1982, the Daejeon campus of the University Sungjeon to Hannam University was. In November 1986, the University was renamed University Sungjeon Sungsil.
