Sorcerer (video game)

Sorcerer ( English for " sorcerer " ) is a fantasy text adventure from Infocom from the year 1984. It plays in the Zork universe. It is the second part of the Enchanter trilogy. The other two parts are Enchanter (1983) and Spell Breaker ( 1985).

Action

After the player had defeated the evil warlock Krill in Enchanter, he was ( German: Circle of the Magician ) with a seat in the Circle of Enchanters rewarded. In addition, he has teamed up with Belboz, the chairman of the Circle, befriended. Said Belboz behaves strangely for days and disappears suddenly, possibly through kidnapping. It is up to the player to discover the fate of his friend.

Gameplay and technology

Sorcerer is a text adventure, that is, there is no graphic elements. Environment and events are made and the actions of the player entered as on-screen text also as text using the keyboard. The parser of Sorcerer understands over 1000 words, 300 words more than in the previous Enchanter. There is no graphic elements. The magic system was taken from the previous Enchanter and supplemented with potions that can be used only once. The system of Spells is partly based on the Earthsea saga by Ursula K. LeGuin and partly on the vancianischen system of role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons rules. As with Vance spells have only in memory are not "stored " before they can be used, and like LeGuin a spell is represented by a nonsense term. This term can then be used in the game as a verb. For example, brings the spell " Frotz " objects to glow; the input > frotz BOOK accordingly brings a book to shine. Playing time is about 30 hours.

As side dishes ( " Feelies " ) contained the early releases of a Sorcerer edition of the ( fictional) Popular - Enchanting magazine as well as the Field Guide to the Creatures of Frobozz, which also served as a copy through a collection of color-coding.

Reception

They commended the consistent game world, the puzzles and the parser. They criticized the banal plot and two unfair dead ends in the game.

Frotz, a Z -machine emulator, has its name from one of the spells from Sorcerer.
