S.O.S. Iceberg is a German film directed by Arnold Fanck from the years 1932/1933, in which mix elements of mountain film drama and disaster film. Among the models, however, include " pole radio plays " of the late Weimar Republic, particularly SOS ... rao rao ... Foyn - " Krasin " saves " Italia " by Friedrich Wolf, who also wrote the script, co-author of SOS Iceberg was.

Action

The Greenland Expedition of Prof. Lorenz is lost in the eternal ice. Previous expeditions rescue his young colleague Dr. John Krafft were unsuccessful, and Krafft must be able to be accused of having not wanted extensively enough. When finally evidence is found that Prof. Lorenz could still be alive, provides Krafft together a new team and breaks in the north to. On Karajak Glacier he finds records, which show that Lorenz wanted to try to reach a nearby Eskimo settlement. She makes an airplane on the way to the Arctic Ocean in order to save her husband. In the splashdown collides the aircraft with the iceberg, Hella, however, it is possible to climb the iceberg. The rescue brings pilot Ernst Udet, who also plays in this Fanck film itself. He sighted the iceberg and mobilized the residents of an Eskimo settlement. Commanded by the flying ace, they come with their canoes to the disabled vessel to help and bring them back to the mainland.

Comments

The film was a German -American co-production realized ( Universal Pictures / German Universal Film AG) and, as is often rotated to the time of the early sound film in two different language versions ( German / English). Much of the filming took place in the summer of 1932 in the vicinity of the settlement Uummannaq in Greenland instead, some scenes were implemented in 1933 in the Swiss Alps.

Fanck worked with his camera crew tried to Richard Angst and Hans Schneeberger, also the lead actress Leni Riefenstahl for several years was already one of Fanck's permanent contributors. With it, as well as the pilot Ernst Udet he had already turned The White Hell of Pitz Palu (1929 ) and storms over the Mont Blanc ( 1930). Behind the camera is Richard fear. The film is a parody of SOS Eisberg and got its premiere on April 18, 1934 at the Berlin Mozartsaal rave reviews. He has been missing until now.

S.O.S. Iceberg had its world premiere on 30 August 1933 in Berlin. The U.S. version of SOS Iceberg premiered on September 22, 1933 in New York.

The screenplay is based on motives of the radio drama presentation of Friedrich Wolf, which deals with the crash of the airship " Italia " in the Arctic Ocean in 1928 and the adjoining international bailout. Emphasizes the template nor the role of radio communications for international solidarity ( the Italian distressed vessel are eventually rescued by a Soviet icebreaker ), so SOS Eisberg is of decidedly national perspective tells: A German radio station coordinates the search operation, a German airman brings salvation.
