Sotirios Kyrgiakos (Greek Σωτήριος Κυργιάκος, born July 23, 1979 in Megalochori, Trikala ) is a Greek football player.

Career

In January 2005, he moved from his hometown club Panathinaikos Athens initially on loan to the Scottish club Glasgow Rangers after the season and was then permanently bound by the Glasgow Rangers. Kyrgiakos completed a total of 22 Premier League games and eight games in the Champions League for the Glasgow Rangers. For the season 2006/ 07 he moved to the German Bundesliga free transfer to Eintracht Frankfurt, where he was employed in 51 league games, five DFB Cup matches and six UEFA Cup matches.

After his contract expired in Frankfurt, Kyrgiakos returned after three and a half years back to Greece and signed on 1 August 2008 a five- year contract with the Greek first division club AEK Athens. After one season, he moved in the summer of 2009 for Premier League club Liverpool FC, where he received a two-year contract.

In the summer of 2011, VfL Wolfsburg Kyrgiakos committed. He signed a two-year contract until 30 June 2013 and was given the jersey number 16 on January 31, 2012 Kyrgiakos was loaned to end of the season Sunderland AFC. For the 2012/13 season Kyrgiakos returned to Wolfsburg, but came on the status of reservists but not beyond. After the season he left after expiration of a contract.

In March 2014 he signed a contract with the Australian club Sydney Olympic.

After his debut in 2002 against Sweden, Kyrgiakos won under Otto Rehhagel a regular place in the Greek national team. At the 2004 European Championships but he could not participate due to injury. At the 2008 European Soccer Championships in Austria and Switzerland, he was re-appointed in the Greek squad and used in all three games of the Greeks during the tournament.

Play

The 1.93 meter tall and 88 kilogram heavy central defender regarded as a good man-marker. Moreover, his heading ability is feared by standard situations, which earned him a player with almost perfect header match the reputation.
