Soulce-Cernay

Soulce - Cernay is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Soulce - Cernay is 393 m, 4 km east of Saint- Hippolyte and about 21 km south-southeast of the town of Montbéliard (air line). The village is located in the Jura, in a valley widening of the Doubs at the mouth of the creek Charbonney, between the heights of Lomont in the north and the plateau of Maîche in the south, near the border with Switzerland.

The area of ​​8.55 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The central part of the area occupied by the Doubs. The Doubs flows here in tortuous course to the west by a maximum of 500 meters wide, flat Talniederung. About two kilometers above the village, the river is dammed to generate electricity to an elongated valley lake. The valley is flanked on both sides by steep, mostly forested slopes that are different places crossed by rock bands. These slopes are divided by several Taleinschnitte of short tributaries of the Doubs, in particular the Cul -de -Sac ( where the creek originates Charbonney ).

To the south, the municipality's area of the Grande Côte extends up to the height of the Queue de Veau, on the 850 meters, the highest elevation of Soulce - Cernay is achieved. In the north, the boundary runs above the striking rock band which leads on to the plateau of Chamesol (700 m).

History

In the Middle Ages Soulce belonged to the territory of the county of La Roche Saint- Hippolyte. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France.

Attractions

The church of Saint -Laurent was originally developed from a medieval building from the 11th century. The present building dates from in 1785.

Population

With 113 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Soulce - Cernay is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1886 230 people were still counted ), a population growth was recorded since the early 1980s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Soulce - Cernay was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture ( livestock and dairy farming, some farmland and orchards ) and the Forestry embossed village.
