Saint-Hippolyte (Doubs)

Saint- Hippolyte is a municipality with 905 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Doubs in the Franche -Comté. The village lies at the confluence of the River Dessoubre in the Doubs.

The Switzerland ( canton of Jura) begin about six kilometers northeast of the community. 35 km southwest of Saint- Hippolyte is the municipality of Morteau. Downriver, ie north, begins after about ten kilometers, the urban area around Montbéliard.

History

Long ago, people have settled at the confluence of the two rivers coming from the Jura Doubs and Dessoubre. The strategic importance of the town grew in the 11th century by the erection of walls.

Count Johann II had at the beginning of the 14th century to build a church. Here 34 years was long kept from 1418 to 1452, the Turin grave cloth, which is mentioned in documents ( deed dated July 6, 1418 signed by the canons of Lirey and Count Humbert la Roche of the noble family house Faucogney ). 1452 got this in the hands of the Duke Louis of Savoy and his wife Anna of Cyprus and, to Chambery. 1532 there was a fire in the chapel of Chambéry, the wipe survived up today visible burn marks. After the French Revolution, Saint- Hippolyte wore such as the names Doubs Marat and Hippolyte. Preceded by the suffix Saint- received the place 1799-1816. During the 19th century saw the tanneries, mills, forges and mills.
