South African general election, 1994

The parliamentary elections in South Africa in 1994 took place on 27 April 1994 and were the first elections in South Africa, which took place under the conditions of the general adult suffrage. So you marked the end of apartheid in South Africa. The elections were conducted under the supervision of the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).

During the three days of the election, millions of people formed queues at the polling stations. A total of 19,726,579 valid votes were counted and 193 081 counted as invalid. The African National Congress under the leadership of Nelson Mandela, whose list of candidates the union Congress of South African Trade Unions ( COSATU ) (Congress of South African Trade Unions ) and the South African Communist Party included ( South African Communist Party), short of the two -thirds majority of the votes. The leadership of the ANC decided to form a government of national unity with the guided by Frederik Willem de Klerk former apartheid government and Party National Party and the Zulu Inkatha Freedom Party party.

Election day is April 27th today under the name of National Freedom Day in South Africa.
