South Pass City is an unincorporated community in Fremont County, Wyoming. It is located on the summit of the South Pass, near the town of Atlantic City, and includes a living area, the actual South Pass City, as well as an open air museum, the South Pass City Historic Site. Since 26 February 1970, the site on the National Register of Historic Places is listed.

History

The South Pass was used by the travelers of the Oregon Trail from 1840 until the establishment of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1869 as a major transition over the Rocky Mountains. 1866 was found near the summit of gold. South Pass Historic Site

1966 bought the Wyoming 's 75th Anniversary Commission, the area of South Pass City to showcase the local history as an open air museum to the public. Since 1970, the South Pass Historic Site on the National Register of Historic Places is performed. Meanwhile, some 30 buildings of South Pass City have been restored and opened to the public.
