Wyoming Territory

The Wyoming Territory was an organized territory of the United States, which existed from 1868 until 10 July 1890. At that time the territory was admitted as the 44th State with the name Wyoming into the Union.

Prehistory

Wyoming has a complex history of territorial relationships due to its location. This comes from the fact that Wyoming is at the intersection of the Louisiana Purchase, the Oregon Country and the Mexican Cession. Parts of the territory that fell under Wyoming's jurisdiction correspond to the present states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska and Utah. These areas were previously the independent states of the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Mexico, and Texas.

The part of the Wyoming territory east of the Continental Divide was acquired in 1803 by the United States in the Louisiana Purchase in 1854 and affiliated with the Nebraska Territory. 1861, the northern half of the Nebraska Territory, which included the northeastern part of the future of Wyoming Territory, part of the Dakota Territory (left ), while the southeastern part at Nebraska remained and an extended " strip of land " formed, which included the settlement of Cheyenne. Then the Idaho Territory was created in 1863. It comprised the whole territory of the modern states of Idaho, Montana, and almost everything of the modern State of Wyoming except the southwest corner.

The part of the Wyoming Territory west of the Continental Divide and north of the 42nd parallel was originally part of Oregon County and since 1848 part of the created Oregon Territory. When Oregon was recorded with its present boundaries in 1859 in the Union, this area was part of the Washington Territory. However, the eastern part was 1854 attached to the Nebraska Territory (right). The Idaho Territory consisted of the country until 1863.

The southwestern corner of what the Wyoming Territory was and south of the 42nd parallel was, was a result of the Mexican Cession of 1848, part of the United States. The eastern portion of the territory was claimed by the Republic of Texas. In 1851 the part of the country west of the Continental Divide part of Utah Territory in 1861 and the Colorado Territory. Then most of them were affiliated with the Nebraska Territory (link) and summarized in 1863 in the Idaho Territory. A small corner of Wyoming remained until the creation of the Wyoming Territory in 1868 part of Utah.

With the creation of Montana Territory in 1864 was the southeastern part of Idaho Territory, which most of the modern Wyoming included, once again, for a short time part of the Dakota Territory (right), although a strip of land along the western boundary of what Wyoming should be, remained with the Idaho territory.

Wyoming Territory

The Wyoming Territory was created by a law adopted on July 25, 1868 Act in the U.S. Congress. At this time, the territory encompassed parts of Dakota, Idaho and Utah Territory. On July 10, 1890 Wyoming was admitted as the 44th state in the Union.
