Southern Winds Airlines

Southern Winds was an Argentine airline, which was the second largest airline in the country after Aerolíneas Argentinas in the 1990s and the early 2000s. In the headlines they came in 2005 primarily by a drug scandal that has led to the closure of the company.

Although the airline was hit hard by the economic crisis in Argentina at the turn of the millennium, she offered from 2003 on as a second Argentine airline intercontinental flights to Spain.

Drug scandal

In September 2004, two bags with 60 kg of cocaine were found in a flight of the southwest of Buenos Aires to Madrid. The investigation by the Argentine authorities conducted in February 2005, the arrest of several employees of the airline, was accused of running a sophisticated drug smuggling system. Also SW- founder Juan Maggio was interrogated by the authorities, however, initially set for lack of evidence of involvement in the scandal released. The process led to a dramatic deterioration of the situation of the airline, which had approached only a few goals in Argentina and has adjusted its flights to Europe and the United States. In July 2005 the line was sold to a catering company from Ushuaia. However, the future of the airline is still unclear.

End of 2005, Southern Winds flight operations all the way in as the only remaining aircraft had to be repaired due to a defect. After that, she was mainly due to the protests of employees in the headlines. Although the airline already no longer operates a long time and already several negotiations, sale or destruction took place, which failed, however, it exists still legally, their future is unclear.
