Southwell Minster

The Southwell Minster is known as a well-preserved church from the Norman period. The previous building was a church from Anglo -Saxon times. This was replaced by the Romanesque west of the present church in the 12th century. This construction was completed in 1130. From 1234 the eastern part of the church, the choir has grown in the Gothic style. To the end of the 13th century, the Chapter House was built in which were held the assemblies of the clergy of the diocese. It is known by the stone carvings, which are interpreted as early depictions of characters from the Robin Hood legend Leaves of Southwell. After being destroyed in the English Civil War, as well as a fire, the building was extensively restored in the 19th century and since 1884 serves as the cathedral.
