Space: 1889

Space: 1889 is a Steampunk role-playing game by Frank Chadwick from 1988 Original manufacturer of Space: 1889., The now defunct company Games Workshop designer ( GDW ). Currently space is: published 1889 by Heliograph Incorporated. The name is a play on the television series Space: 1999 (Eng. Moonbase Alpha 1 ). Studio 2 took 2010 Red Sands out an adaptation for Savage Worlds. In July 2012, appeared in Clockwork publishing a German -language adaptation, which uses the Ubiquity rules.

Background

Space: 1889 is set in an alternate version of the Victorian era, in which the ether theory has proven to be true and the other planets of the solar system are inhabited. The interplanetary space by means of ether propellers is well developed. An important role is played by the occurring only on Mars commodity lifting timber (Lift Wood), with the aid of space ships ( and pure aircraft ) within the gravitational fields of the planets can fly without huge helium or hydrogen balloon need to.

The focus of the published material is located on the British Empire and the colonized Mars by him. The game receives many parodic elements by partial ludicrous alternative developments to the real story and the use of stereotypes such as the Upper Rogue Ravachol.

System

Space: 1889 used a system based on six -sided dice control system. Although the actual dice mechanics are quite simple, their variety is confusing. So there is already for simple attribute or skill checks two equal cubes methods. There are also rules for the short-and long-range combat, heavy weapons, the fight with wild animals and ship -to-ship, which overlap to some extent, in important respects, however, are different. This reflects the age of the system, today's role-playing games would use a central cube mechanism which could be with little or no adjustments to the enumerated situations apply.

Noteworthy are the simple but effective method of character creation and the rules for inventions, with which the characters can make happy the game world. One point that occurs otherwise in just a few role-playing games.

Although derived from wargames rules was seen controversially, the reception of the background was very good, often that caused the rules of GDW often used as a mere source book for the rules to another, generic system (eg D6 was resorted to by West End Games or GURPS ).

2010 Setting finally appeared in the new publishing Pinnacle Entertainment under the title Space 1889: Red Sands and uses the rules of Savage Worlds. Here, an emphasis is placed on adventure backgrounds on Mars.

In July 2012, the movement -Verlag published a German version of Space: 1889, which uses the Ubiquity system of Hollow Earth Expedition, making the game focus on tactical combat ( skirmish ) toward narrative ( storytelling ) is to be relocated. Content, there are some differences to the original American version. For example, Abraham Lincoln died in 1862 of typhoid fever, which has the consequence that the CSA 1889 still exist. Other historical events have been changed so that, for example, a French invasion of Belgium, the German -British alliance strengthens first. The framework includes the worlds Earth, Mars, Venus, Mercury and the Moon.

Published material

As a periodical about Space: 1889 was the ether Society Newsletter serve, but soon went up in the Transactions of the Royal Martian Geographical Society ( TRMGS ), a fanzine, edited by Mark Clark. Between 1991 and 1994 eight editions appeared, the magazine was discontinued. At the end of the decade TRMGS by the company heliograph were revived, which made a new audience, many of the original products. In the first two volumes of the original eight numbers of fanzines were reissued, the third volume contains new material. For cost reasons, the TRMGS were then adjusted again. The material for a fourth band is on the websites of heliograph (see below). In addition, many articles were published about Space: 1889 in GDWS House Magazine Challenge, mainly adventures and scenarios for games.

All material is only available in English. However, the movement Publishing has announced that a German version to appear.

In the new edition of heliograph are two of the ( thinner ) sourcebooks and adventure combined to form a band, as can be seen in the list of the ISBN.

In 2009 they had an extended version of the adventure Canal Priests of Mars. It contains those parts that were cut at the first release in 1990 for reasons of space.
