Location

The Hospital Lane opens in the southwest on the Bubenbergplatz, in the northwest on bulwark, to the north in the From Werdtpassage and in the hospital gas passage in the northeast in the Karl Schenk Passage and to the orphanage place in the East in the market street, in the southeast on the bears place and to the south the Storchengässchen.

History

During construction of the fourth fortification, in 1342, a little to the south -turning road to Bümplizstrasse part of the main axis of the city was the old. In the 18th century, the space- like expansion of the hospital alley in front of the Holy Ghost Church Plätzli was called at the gate. Of central importance to the recent history of the Hospital Lane is the department store chain Loeb. It goes back to a fashion shop on Spital Gasse 32, which opened on September 9, 1881, was transferred in 1899 to its present building at the Hospital Lane 47/49. The so-called Loebegge at the entrance of this building is the most popular meeting place for the city of Bern.

In the Hospital Lane since 1638 is the Pfeiferbrunnen. The neo-Gothic fountain in front of the Christoffel tower was transferred to Bümplizstrasse.

The Hospital Lane is like the other main streets pedestrian, but is increasingly burdened by several tram and bus lines.
