The downturn (in French and in German-speaking Switzerland Retournement ) is an aerobatic maneuver that can be best thought of as a half loop down from the flight back to the normal flight position. For this purpose, in inverted flight at the controls evenly but firmly pulled. The stick is returned to the neutral position when reaching the normal flight position.

It is important that the input speed is chosen low enough, otherwise by the drive in recording the half loop aircraft from being overloaded by exceeding either the maximum or allowed G-load.

The figure is also exported from the normal flight position in connection with a previously flown half role. This combination is then called Left or Right downturn, depending on the direction in which the half roll is flown. With this combination, the difficulty arises that some aircraft the speed for half the roll must be higher than they should be with the introduction of the half loops afterwards. In this case, the nose is taken up over the horizon to reduce by a rising trajectory speed. This is very important especially for gliders, as they absorb through their aerodynamic quality during the half loops much driving.

In the downturn, there is an aerobatic maneuver in the Aresti catalog.
