Sprague Cleghorn

Sprague " Peg " Cleghorn ( born March 11, 1890 in Montreal, Quebec; † July 11, 1956 ) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player and coach, who from 1918 to 1928 for the Ottawa Senators, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto St. Pats and Boston Bruins played in the National Hockey League.

Career

He was 27 years old when the NHL went to its first season, and Cleghorn was one of the most prominent players in the early years. He was an outstanding player, but also a feared Roughneck. Together with his brother Odie he made in a 1922 game against Ottawa that three players the Senators seriously injured had to leave the ice. For the next game in Ottawa he had to be smuggled through a back entrance to the hall. With the Ottawa Senators in 1920 and 1921 as well as captain of the Montreal Canadiens in 1924, he won the Stanley Cup three times. In the celebrations they lead together with their manager Léo Dandurand in his house. On the way, they had a car breakdown. Sprague placed the cup on the sidewalk. When they had come up in the House of Dandurand later realized that they lacked the Cup. Fortunately, he was also when they returned where Cleghorn had placed him.

In 1931, he coached the Montreal Maroons. In 1958 he was honored with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
